Images are used everywhere and in this day and age it seems simple to source an image of nearly anything through a simple Internet image search.
The problem with this though is that images just like textbooks are subject to copyright and if you take the first image you see from Google or Bing then is quite possible that you are in breach of copyright. The good news is that it is possible to avoid breaching copyright by sourcing images from specific sites or performing slightly more advanced web searches on Google or Bing.
Our favourite sites for image searches are below (with the exception of logos, all images on this website have been sourced from these):
- Creative Commons
- uPic (UCC own image gallery; log-in required – e.mail firstname.lastname@example.org)
It is also worth noting that both Bing and Google allow you to filter an image search by license/usage rights the two short screencasts below show how this can be done.
