The student hub is scheduled to open in early 2018. Its essence is to be an innovative space where student learning and development will be facilitated and supported, building on the existing commitment to the UCC student experience. It is a five story technology-enriched building for staff, students and visitors to the University. It will provide a new home for student activities and services.
The hub is ambitious and aspirational and its creation will require colleagues across UCC to re-consider how some critical activities are designed and delivered. The creation of new learning spaces, together with the co-habitation of support services and student led activities will create an environment that is characterised by interactivity, creativity, collaboration and enterprise.
The building aims to be airy, bright and colourful with modern interiors and communal spaces similar to the examples below.
Innovative learning spaces planned for the ground floor of the Student Hub include a maker space that will allow students a space for creation for example poster making, stage and set construction etc., technology enhanced teaching and learning spaces and the Market Hall event space which can be used for lectures, conferences, performances etc.
On the first floor there will be ‘The Schtepps’ a different take on a tiered lecture hall with no tables and chairs to sit at, but large steps furnished with beanbags and cushions. This space can be used for lectures, performances, debates etc. The Learning Balcony overlooking the market hall will also contain pods which can be used for individual and group study.
The third floor is very much dedicated to teaching and learning with an open-plan Teaching and Learning Creative Zone, as well as project and group spaces for group sizes of 6-10.
The most impressive learning space is at the top of the Student Hub building. A four and a half meter high, technology-packed learning space, it can be used for many purposes such as exhibitions, conferences, lectures, performances etc. With panoramic views of the campus, it has been designed to impress, and will provide a flexible space for use by all UCC students, staff and visitors alike.
